Love and Death--the two great themes of literature--come together in this impressive first novel by English author Jenny Downham. That teens love to dwell on both these themes was a fact not lost on this actor-turned-author, and her YA offers up plenty of both. It movingly depicts the sixteen-year-old narrator's final months as her illness consumes her just at the age when she is becoming most hungry for life. Always maintaining a hard-edged realism, Before I Die never descends into cheap and easy sentiment. Tessa's parents are separated, her brother's a pain, her best friend is insufficiently focused on her, and the love she so desperately seeks to experience is always threatening to slip through her fingers. While all her circle tiptoe around her illness, Tessa just wants to live, and in her determination to do so she manages to pack her long list of things she must do "before I die," into a funny, heartbreaking narrative that will stay with you. Highly recommended.
